When researching things to do for our first trip to Paris, two things that popped up quite a bit were to seek out the best hot chocolate in the city and to sample the macarons. But where does one start such an adventure? I had planned out a route, trying to see if I could find my favorite hot chocolate and macarons – and you know what happened? We only made it to one spot! Such is life. I guess that always gives us something to look forward to on future visits.
After we walked around and admired the Louvre from the outside (most major attractions were closed due to the November 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris), I had remembered reading about the ever-popular Angelina and how it was just a short jaunt from the Louvre. So, we headed over in that direction and found it pretty easily.
If you’re on the go (like we were), you can take a sharp right after you walk into the door and order your hot cocoa and macarons to go from the little delicatessen counter, rather than sitting down for tea and a meal. But oh goodness, beware of all the beautiful goodies they have in that glass case! They are so perfectly enticing.
I didn’t realize it at the time, but Angelina (founded in 1903) is quite a prestigious and sophisticated little tea room, with past guests such as Coco Chanel and Proust – and their prices definitely reflect their reputation and atmosphere. I think we paid close to 13 euros for a small hot chocolate and four macarons!
The Hot Chocolate
The hot chocolate was unlike anything I’ve ever experience before – really thick, dark, and extremely chocolatey. They stuck a straw in it and I could barely get it out of there! It turns out that their hot chocolate is an African hot chocolate composed of three kinds of African cocoa from Niger, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. Definitely interesting! I could barely make it through to finish my cup of hot chocolate, as it was pretty sweet.
The Macarons
We chose to get four macarons (’cause dang, they’re a bit pricey!). They were so pretty and colorful in the display, it was hard to decide which flavors to choose. We ended up choosing the raspberry (framboise), lemon (citron), caramel and Mont Blanc, which had a chestnut flavor to it.
If you don’t know what macarons are, they are not macaroons which are typically made with coconut. Macarons are like pure sugar (and egg whites), so be prepared for a sweet bite.
If you’re on your way from The Louvre, making your way to the Jardin des Tuileries or even the Champs-Élysées, I would definitely recommend a stop at Angelina!
