Phoenix Food Guide: Best Places to Eat and Drink in Phoenix, Scottsdale & Mesa

This post may contain affiliate links wherein I earn a small commission if you purchase or subscribe to a product from one of my links (at no extra cost to you!). Read my full Privacy Policy here.

The Greater Phoenix Area is such a fun foodie destination! From hopping brunch spots and taco joints to restaurants with Southwest flare, Phoenix is a culinary mecca waiting to be explored. After multiple trips to Phoenix and surrounding cities, I’ve put together this Phoenix Food Guide with a list of recommended restaurants that I think are worth a visit in the area!

This Phoenix Food Guide also includes recommendations in the nearby cities of Scottsdale and Mesa, which we also frequent when we are in the area.

And because most of us love a good drink or two, I’ve listed out some great spots to grab a drink, including local breweries, a wine bar, and a cidery! Enjoy!

Best Brunch Spots in Phoenix

I love hunting for brunch in different cities, and Phoenix has no shortage of great brunch restaurants! I have a whole post with more details and photos from my favorite brunch spots here, but here’s a rundown on my top picks.

Valentine

4130 N 7th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85013
http://www.valentinephx.com/

Located in the Melrose neighborhood of Phoenix, Valentine is an eclectic restaurant adorned in Mid-Century Modern style. Their brunch menu has a touch of Arizonan flare, sourcing ingredients unique to the American Southwest.

You cannot go wrong with their biscuit (yes, just one sadly) and gravy made with a Sonoran wheat biscuit, red chili sausage gravy, and a duck egg.

Biscuit & Gravy
Churro Waffle

The churro waffle is also divine and nearly sinful, topped with dulce de leche, mesquite chai spice, and whipped cream. A truly unique menu exists here and foodies should definitely add this to their lists!

Ocotillo

3243 N 3rd Street Ac, Phoenix, AZ 85012
https://www.ocotillophx.com/

Octotillo in Phoenix is slinging out some mouthwatering savory brunch items like the Breakfast Chimichanga, stuffed with black beans, chicken, and scrambled eggs and smothered in green chili sauce and queso fresco.

Their Smoked Brisket and Parmesan Polenta is another killer dish, which comes with a fried egg and crispy onions. Top it off with a Bloody Mary, and you’ve got yourself a satisfying brunch.

Octotillo is also open for lunch and dinner, and they have a lovely outdoor space/beer garden to enjoy your good eats!

Fàme Caffe

4700 N Central Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85012
https://famecaffe.com/

Fàme Caffe is tasty brunch spot located in the north end of the Midtown neighborhood serving up American breakfast favorites, Mexican-inspired dishes, and menu items with French flare.

I highly recommend both the chilaquiles with chorizo and the breakfast wrap (also with chorizo)! Their chai latte is also a winner, and they even have their own tasty house-made hot sauce.

Don’t be afraid of the line at Fàme Caffe. They move customers through rather quickly and the food comes out lightning fast once ordered!

Hash Kitchen

Multiple Locations in Greater Phoenix Area
https://www.hashkitchen.com/

Hash Kitchen is a small local chain with some really fun vibes! My favorite part about Hash Kitchen is their build-your-own Bloody Mary bar. They have over 50 toppings to choose from, including items like fried raviolis and meatballs. It’s basically a whole brunch meal on its own!

Their Carnitas Hash and Huevos Rancheros Hash are both great brunch options and be forewarned – the portion sizes are gigantic! I recommend sharing a hash dish between two people, especially if you are filling up at the Bloody Mary Bar. They are also famous for their cannoli donuts, which we didn’t try but can’t wait to next time.

Wren & Wolf

Website | 2 N Central Ave #101, Phoenix, AZ 85004

Located in downtown Phoenix, Wren & Wolf gives off high class vibes for dinner but also delivers on their brunch menu.

Start with a spicy Bloody Mary and then make your way through a plate of their shrimp & grits. This savory brunch dish is made with kalamata olives, capers, white wine, anchovies, Calabrian chili, and a sprinkle of greens. Direct words from my husband: “this is the best rendition of shrimp and grits I’ve ever had.”

Other dishes I’m personally eyeing: a French omelette with buttered king crab, their giant cinnamon roll with candied pistachios, and a lil caviar bump with a glass of bubbles!

Breakfast Club

Website | Multiple locations

With three locations in the greater Phoenix area, if you’re craving biscuits and gravy, Breakfast Club is where you’ll want to satisfy that!

Their creamy gravy is loaded with chunks of sage and fennel sausage and served over fluffy jalapeno cheddar biscuits with a side of house-made hot sauce, potatoes O’Brien, and eggs of your choice. This is a hearty and delicious meal to fuel you for an entire day!

Best Lunch/Dinner Spots in Phoenix

This list of lunch and dinner spots in the greater Phoenix area barely scratches the surface. There are just too many good options spread across multiple cities! Here are some of my favorites.

Vecina

Website | 3433 N 56th St, Phoenix, AZ 85018

Vecina is hands down my favorite restaurant in Phoenix, serving modern dishes with Latin-American inspiration.

Starting with the best – Vecina’s short rib and white bean puree is a dish I could eat every single visit! This savory appetizer is packed with bold flavors and served with probably the best flour tortilla I have had in my life. Don’t skip this one.

Short rib with white bean puree at Vecina

Equally impressive is their papas verde with chorizo with green tomatillo sauce and the gambas al ajillo – a shrimp dish that comes in a very close second place to the short rib. The tlayuda is also very good, served tostada-style with well-seasoned beans and smoked green chile pork.

Everything here is incredibly flavorful and I can’t wait to try every item on the menu! Wash all the deliciousness down with a spicy marg or one of their refreshing seasonal cocktails!

Papas verde at Vecina

Vecina is only open for happy hour and dinner and they will fill up fast. If you don’t have a reservation, try to pop in at opening to snag a seat!

Clever Koi

4236 N Central Ave #100, Phoenix, AZ 85012
https://www.thecleverkoi.com/

Clever Koi is a Pan-Asian restaurant located in the North Midtown area of Phoenix and you’ll definitely want to put this spot on your list if you are a lover of Asian cuisines! They are open early for Happy Hour with food and drink specials, and they have an excellent cocktail menu with tasty libations to choose from.

“The Enabler”
Clever Koi Steam Buns

The Steam Buns are a great appetizer to start off with – our favorites being the Korean Fried Chicken and Pork Belly. Clever Koi’s dumplings are also must in my opinion. Both the Pig Face and Braised Short Rib dumplings are amazing and complex in flavor. We did slightly favor the Pig Face dumplings which come with their insanely good kimchi (so much so that we made a double order!).

I also recommend getting the XO Noodles. It’s hard to go wrong with a good noodle dish, and these are on HH special!

Green Corner

Multiple Locations in Mesa, Chandler & Scottsdale
https://greencorneraz.com/

Green Corner is an amazing Mediterranean casual restaurant with locations in Mesa, Chandler and North Scottsdale. We ate at the one in Mesa as it was close to a hotel we were staying at one year for spring training. It was some of the best Mediterranean food we’ve had!

Their lamb gyro plate is to die for and their falafels are crispy and flavorful. This is also a great budget option for when you are wanting an affordable fast-casual meal.

Topo Arizona

Website | 301 N Gilbert Rd Bldg 2, Gilbert, AZ 85234

Worth a little trek out to Gilbert is Topo, dishing up delicious prickly pear soft serve, burritos with BBQd meats sourced from their sister restaurant next door (Joe’s), and specials like their brisket elote bowl.

Really what drew me here was their soft serve and prickly pear is a must-try flavor profile when you’re visiting the Sonoran desert. It’s thick, creamy, and absolutely refreshing on a warm spring or summer day! The prickly pear lemonade is also a good choice.

Burrito-wise, we had the pulled pork loco style, which comes with elote, Fritos, hot sauce (which actually has some good heat to it), cilantro, cheese, and tomatillo crema. It’s hearty, delicious, and the tortilla itself is pretty stellar. And if you’re extra into elote, the brisket bowl is pretty tasty too.

I’d suggest visiting Topo before or after a nearby spring training game in Mesa. It can get pretty busy here though, especially as the day goes on. People line up to get that cool soft serve in the heat and to get a peek of this iconic gopher-topped building!

Cornish Pasty Co.

Multiple Locations
https://www.cornishpastyco.com/

I must say, I was super excited to try the Cornish Pasty Company after our visit to the English countryside back in 2018. We didn’t get a chance to try the pasties there so I am glad we had the opportunity here in Arizona! They have such a huge menu of choices – everything from vegan and vegetarian, to meat lovers delights.

For meat lovers, the Carne Adovada is an excellent choice, stuffed with New Mexican style pork red chili stew, Mexican rice, hatch chilis, and cheddar cheese. Nothing short of a flavor bomb here!

For veggie lovers, the Veggie Mexican is a savory winner – filled with vegetarian Quorn “beef” crumbles, eggs, cheddar cheese, potato, and hatch chilis. It was also super tasty with that flaky crust! Comfort at it’s finest.

Lom Wong

Website | 218 E Portland St, Phoenix, AZ 85004

If you’re a fan of Thai food, and more specifically Northern Thai, Lom Wong is an excellent spot in downtown Phoenix.

The Moklen crispy pork belly curry here is the best Thai curry I’ve ever had, with big chunks of pork belly that basically taste like candy. This curry is full of flavor and has the perfect amount of spice. It even won my non-curry-loving husband over!

Other great items here are their crispy fried chicken wings, lemonfish crudo, and lemongrass and hibiscus crème brulées (the last of which were complimentary since they were out of a few dishes when we visited).

A return visit in the near future is very necessary – I can’t wait to try their Naem Khao crispy rice salad (similar to Lao nam khao – one of my all-time favorite dishes) and their whole-fried branzino.

Fry Bread House

Website | 4545 N 7th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85013

For something uniquely Arizonan, try the fry bread at the James Beard Award-winning Fry Bread House in Central Phoenix.

Fry Bread is a staple in Indigenous North American cuisine from the Navajo and other tribes (in the case of Fry Bread House, the Tohono O’odham people). It’s a simple flatbread that’s fried, fluffy and delicious, born out of necessity back in the 1800s for survival.

This restaurant is probably the most popular in the Phoenix area for fry bread – we got there right at opening at 11:00 a.m. on a Monday and the restaurant filled up quickly!

So far, we’ve had the “Indian” taco ultimate style, filled with beans, green chile beef, lettuce, sour cream, and cheese. The fry bread itself is excellent, but if I had a do-over, I’d opt for the meat taco without the beans to get more of the meat flavors.

Some Extra Notes:

  • Because of their James Beard distinction, prices are a little higher than other fry bread spots you might find in the area.
  • Indoor seating is limited, but they do have patio seating out front as well.
  • Try their special drinks when available! We had a delicious blackberry orange lemonade.

Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria

Multiple Locations
https://www.loumalnatis.com/arizona-phoenix

If you’re in the mood for some deep dish pizza (maybe even after a Cubs spring training game), you can’t go wrong with Lou Malnati’s! Yes, it’s a chain restaurant hailing from Chicago but their pizzas are delicious and deep dish is not a style of pizza you can just get anywhere.

I recommend the Malnati Chicago Classic, which comes with sausage, and adding hot giardiniera as an extra topping.

Full service restaurants are best for Lou’s in my opinion so you can enjoy a deep dish when it’s fresh out of the over. These are located in Scottsdale, Tempe, and Surprise. The other locations are carry-out/delivery only.

Gadzooks

Multiple Locations
https://www.gadzooksaz.com/

Gadzooks is a fast-casual Mexican restaurant with a few locations in the Phoenix area. I’ve only eaten their tacos thus far but they are delicious! They have fresh house-made tortillas and their vegetarian sweet & spicy cornbread tacos with “Christmas” sauce (red and green sauce combo) are so craveable. It sounds like an odd thing for a taco filling, but let me tell you, it works!

Gadzooks also serves enchiladas, soups, and nachos, all built the way you want – sort of Chipotle style.

Chompie’s

Multiple Locations
https://chompies.com/

Chompie’s is a New York Style deli/restaurant and bakery with several locations in the area serving up delicious foods like pastrami sandwiches, Jewish sliders with brisket, and my favorite, knishes.

My introduction to Chompies came at one of the A’s spring training games where we had their famous sliders and a warm potato knish. Everything was so tasty, and I often dream about going back to Phoenix just to get a few orders of their fluffy and flavorful knishes!

Best Places to Grab a Drink

Wren House Brewing

2125 N 24th St, Phoenix, AZ 85008
https://www.wrenhousebrewing.com/

Wren House earns the top spot on my list for best beer in the Phoenix area! Located in the Green Gables neighborhood of Phoenix, you’ll find this funky taproom pouring some delicious hazy IPAs. The Mexican Coffee Stout is also a must!

Their cozy taproom, built in a converted bungalow house, is just a nice chill spot to hang out and they have outdoor patio seating out back for when the weather is nice!

12 West Brewing

12 W Main St, Mesa, AZ 85201
http://12westbrewing.com/

If you’re heading to an A’s or Cubs game in Mesa, be sure to check out 12 West Brewing in the Downtown area! They have a spacious, modern taproom with a full bar and kitchen. The beer is good and it’s a great place to pre-game before heading to one of the local spring training games.

If you’re a fan of sours, I recommend getting a pour of their Imaginary Penguin Kettle Sour – it was our favorite beer on our last visit there!

Huss Brewing

225 E Monroe St, Phoenix, AZ 85004
https://www.hussbrewing.com/

Huss Brewing has a couple of locations in the Greater Phoenix area. Get a flight and sample some local Arizonan beers while enjoying some tasty pub grub! Their Copper State IPA is a staple – we even had some of these while walking around at the Desert Botanical Garden.

Cider Corps

31 S Robson Suite 103, Mesa, AZ 85210
https://www.cidercorpsaz.com/

Cider Corps is a veteran-owned cidery located in Downtown Mesa, now with a secondary location in Gilbert. It’s one of our favorite spots in Mesa! Pull up a chair and grab a flight of ciders to try before or after one of the local spring training games.

We loved the the P.O.G. (passion fruit, orange & guava), Mango Foxtrot (mango and rose hip – also sold in bottles), the Sangin Sangria (a dry-hopped cider made with Arizona prickly pear).

They also now have pizza onsite from Myke’s and coffee from Pair Cupworks, making this an excellent spot to sip ciders and hang around for a bit.

I hope this Phoenix food guide gave you some good ideas and inspiration on where to eat in drink in the Greater Phoenix area! Do you have any recommendations on where we should chow down next? Drop me a note in the comments!

Found my favorite restaurant in Phoenix!

This spot is a serious gem. Everything we ate was expertly crafted with incredible, bold flavors!

If I could return and eat one dish over and over again, it would be the short rib with white bean puree and probably the best flour tortilla I've ever had. 10/10, no notes.

A close second - the gambas al ajillo. The shrimp were bathed in a spicy paprika garlic butter that you'll want to soak up every last bit of with their delicious bread.

I'm already planning to visit Phoenix next year for spring training mostly because I want to eat here again!

🇮🇸 Iceland foodie experiences not to miss!!! Thes 🇮🇸 Iceland foodie experiences not to miss!!!

These are all of my favorite Iceland food & drink experiences. Save this for your trip to Iceland!

The food in Iceland kind of blew me away. I know a lot of people travel to Iceland for the scenery (because it's absolutely incredible), but I do think you should try and incorporate some of these food experiences too.

Iceland may not be the most budget friendly when it comes to eating out, but the food is definitely worth the splurge in my opinion.

What do you think you would add to your itinerary?

🇮🇸 Day 6 & 7 of a one-week Iceland itinerary! Fin 🇮🇸 Day 6 & 7 of a one-week Iceland itinerary!

Finishing up my little Iceland itinerary series, this is how we spent our final two days in the country.

We drove from Vik on the south coast and did the popular Golden Circle, making stops at Kerid Crater, Friðheimar Tomato farm, Gullfoss, and Thingvellir National Park. In between all that, I got to pet and feed Icelandic horses and had some of the best ice cream ever at a dairy farm.

The Golden Circle was probably the most crowded of all the routes we did in Iceland, probably because it's the easiest day trip from Reykjavik. Still loved every moment though!

Our last dinner was at Forrettabarinn aka The Appetizer Bar, where dishes are small plates, encouraging you to try lots of different items (even horse 😳). All of the food was delicious, as it was everywhere we went in Iceland.

We had a leisurely final day, strolling around Reykjavik looking for souvenirs and had a delicious final Icelandic lunch (couldn't resist one more round of Plokkfiskur.

And that's the end of our magical adventure to probably my favorite place in the world. I can't wait to be back!

This was probably my favorite day of our week in Iceland. Seeing the landscape of the South Coast is something else, from canyons and waterfalls to moss-covered lava fields and even a glacier lake! Incredible is all I can say.

We ended our day back in Vik to watch the sunset and chowed down on black crust pizza 🍕

I ate so many different things in Iceland, I needed to break it up in three parts 😂

Iceland has such a varied food scene, from international dishes to Icelandic specialties like plokkfiskur (kind of like a fish pie/casserole), which was absolutely delicious.

And those cinnamon rolls...I am still dreaming about them!

Day 3 in Iceland! 🇮🇸 Our third day in Iceland was Day 3 in Iceland! 🇮🇸

Our third day in Iceland was a day trip to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula - aka "Iceland in Miniature." It was very windy and cold here but much less busy than the routes of the South Coast! We saw such a variety of landscapes on the peninsula, though I wish we would have had a little bit more daylight to add more stops.

Back in Reykjavik for the evening, we had dinner and then went on a successful Northern Lights chase!

It was a long day but awesome!
