The Best Portland Brunch Spots

This post may contain affiliate links wherein I earn a small commission if you purchase or subscribe to a product from one of my links (at no extra cost to you!). Read my full Privacy Policy here.

Brunch is alive and well in Portland, Oregon! I am on a mission to eat my way through all of Portland’s best brunch spots, though I have to take it kind of slow for the sake of my waistline.

I was never a huge breakfast/brunch person growing up but I’ve taken quite a liking to it in recent years, especially after discovering Portland! You see, brunch in Portland is kind of a thing. Like, a big thing. Portlanders are serious about their brunching, and the lines out the door will certainly prove that! They even parody this in the show Portlandia.

There have sadly been so many closures over the last couple of years, that my list of best Portland brunch spots has slowly dwindled down. I guess that just means I need to make it back to scope out some new spots!

Even though I’ve had to take a lot of my favorites of this list, there are still some really great spots that I’d visit over and over again.

1. Gravy

3957 N Mississippi Ave, Portland, OR 97227
http://gravyrestaurant.com/menu/

Not only is the food at Gravy completely delicious, but they give you the most gigantic portions I’ve ever seen! It’s seriously enough for two or three whole meals. If you are not splitting food, you are most likely going to have leftovers to take home with you, which is just fine with me. I like re-living an amazing food experience over and over again.

Gravy Portland - Portland Brunch Spots

Gravy makes a mean tofu scramble and they have perfect country potatoes. I got the Greco Scramble with tofu (hold the cheese, to taste some of their vegan options), and my husband had the corned beef hash which is his go-to breakfast item.

We also got a half order of the challah bread French toast to split and wow…definitely try it people! I typically stick with the savory breakfast items, but this will make you swoon for sweet!

They also have extremely tasty vegetarian biscuits and gravy. I mean they better at a place called Gravy, am I right?

2. Screen Door

2337 E Burnside St, Portland, OR 97214
http://screendoorrestaurant.com/

If you want was hearty Southern-inspired brunch fare, Screen Door is one of the most highly-recommended restaurants in Portland! The menu has changed a bit since we last visited, and I’m desperate to return and try some Southern comfort food.

They are well known for their chicken and waffles, so if you really want to try a place that serves good chicken and waffles, Screen Door is where it’s at! You can choose 1, 2 or 3 pieces of fried chicken, which is served atop a sweet potato waffle for a unique twist.

When we visited, my husband got a gigantic sausage and egg sandwich and a side of their creamy cheddar grits. It was delicious and super filling!

I got the veggie migas (which is no longer on the menu), along with a side of veggie biscuits and gravy. While they weren’t my favorite Portland brunch dishes, they were still tasty.

3. Tin Shed

1438 NE Alberta St, Portland, OR 97211
http://tinshedgardencafe.com/#menu

Tin Shed was actually our very first Portland brunch experience and it made a lasting impression! It was a hot summer day (yes, Portland has those) and we waited an hour to get in…on a Monday, no less. But it was soooo worth the wait.

One more reason to love this place? They have a dog-friendly menu. Yes, brunchers, you can have brunch here with your furry friends! Tin Shed will also customize meals to make them vegan. Win for everyone!

Everything Naughty at Tin Shed

My husband and I both ordered the Everything Naughty, which comes with biscuits & gravy, eggs, hash browns with sour cream, and your choice of meat (I went with the veggie sausage). Their veggie biscuits and gravy are so yummy – the mushroom gravy is really nice and creamy!

Our friends who were with us also tried and enjoyed the Salm I Am and the Tim Curry. No disappointment here.

4. Pine State Biscuits

2204 NE Alberta St, Portland, OR 97211
http://www.pinestatebiscuits.com/menu/

Pine State Biscuits is probably my favorite brunch spot in Portland! At Pine State, you can build your own biscuits, feast on biscuits and gravy, or order one of their many biscuit sandwiches. The most popular is The Reggie (with fried chicken, bacon, cheese & gravy), and husband can attest to it being the best biscuit sandwich he’s ever had – and the best biscuit for that matter.

They also have this really good side of hash browns called Hashups, which come with either ham or steak, mushrooms, grilled onions, and melted cheese. Man they were good! I’m typically a country potato gal but these were amazing.

I also really love the biscuits and gravy here as well. They go great with the hashups for a complete meal.

They have several locations, but we love the Alberta Arts spot since it’s one of my favorite neighborhoods in Portland.

5. Jam on Hawthorne

2239 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland, OR 97214
http://www.jamonhawthorne.com/

Jam used to be my favorite pick for the best Portland brunch spot but they now come in at a close second to Pine State (sorry Jam, those biscuits hit just right!)

Jam is a great spot for vegetarians and vegans with so many different options to choose from! I highly recommend the spicy Bloody Mary and one of their tofu scrambles. I hate it when I order a tofu scramble and end up with a plate of cubed tofu. Instead, this is actually scrambled how you would prepare scrambled eggs. I had the Cheech & Chong, which comes with vegetarian chorizo, onions, and queso fresco.

Their hash browns are super crispy, and the Brian’s Hash is equally as tasty for the meat eaters. As for the biscuits and gravy, they are definitely worthy of repeat visits.

Are you hungry yet?

Here are some things you’ll want to know about brunch in Portland ahead of time:

  • Expect to wait for an hour in line. It’s a good time to catch up with friends though!
  • Most places in Portland are great for both carnivores and herbivores.
  • Portion sizes are extremely generous – come hungry.

Portlanders and visitors to Portland – send me your recommendations so I can add to this list!

Happy brunching!

I love this post. Portland is probably the city in the US I want to visit most and hopefully I’ll make it there soon!!! I can’t decide which of these I’d try first. That biscuit place made me drool a little!

📍Vecina - Phoenix, AZ Found my favorite restauran 📍Vecina - Phoenix, AZ

Found my favorite restaurant in Phoenix!

This spot is a serious gem. Everything we ate was expertly crafted with incredible, bold flavors!

If I could return and eat one dish over and over again, it would be the short rib with white bean puree and probably the best flour tortilla I've ever had. 10/10, no notes.

A close second - the gambas al ajillo. The shrimp were bathed in a spicy paprika garlic butter that you'll want to soak up every last bit of with their delicious bread.

I'm already planning to visit Phoenix next year for spring training mostly because I want to eat here again!

🇮🇸 Iceland foodie experiences not to miss!!! Thes 🇮🇸 Iceland foodie experiences not to miss!!!

These are all of my favorite Iceland food & drink experiences. Save this for your trip to Iceland!

The food in Iceland kind of blew me away. I know a lot of people travel to Iceland for the scenery (because it's absolutely incredible), but I do think you should try and incorporate some of these food experiences too.

Iceland may not be the most budget friendly when it comes to eating out, but the food is definitely worth the splurge in my opinion.

What do you think you would add to your itinerary?

🇮🇸 Day 6 & 7 of a one-week Iceland itinerary! Fin 🇮🇸 Day 6 & 7 of a one-week Iceland itinerary!

Finishing up my little Iceland itinerary series, this is how we spent our final two days in the country.

We drove from Vik on the south coast and did the popular Golden Circle, making stops at Kerid Crater, Friðheimar Tomato farm, Gullfoss, and Thingvellir National Park. In between all that, I got to pet and feed Icelandic horses and had some of the best ice cream ever at a dairy farm.

The Golden Circle was probably the most crowded of all the routes we did in Iceland, probably because it's the easiest day trip from Reykjavik. Still loved every moment though!

Our last dinner was at Forrettabarinn aka The Appetizer Bar, where dishes are small plates, encouraging you to try lots of different items (even horse 😳). All of the food was delicious, as it was everywhere we went in Iceland.

We had a leisurely final day, strolling around Reykjavik looking for souvenirs and had a delicious final Icelandic lunch (couldn't resist one more round of Plokkfiskur.

And that's the end of our magical adventure to probably my favorite place in the world. I can't wait to be back!
🇮🇸 Day 5 in Iceland of a one-week Iceland itinerar 🇮🇸 Day 5 in Iceland of a one-week Iceland itinerary!

This was probably my favorite day of our week in Iceland. Seeing the landscape of the South Coast is something else, from canyons and waterfalls to moss-covered lava fields and even a glacier lake! Incredible is all I can say.

We ended our day back in Vik to watch the sunset and chowed down on black crust pizza 🍕

Everything I ate and drank in Iceland - Part 2! I Everything I ate and drank in Iceland - Part 2!

I ate so many different things in Iceland, I needed to break it up in three parts 😂

Iceland has such a varied food scene, from international dishes to Icelandic specialties like plokkfiskur (kind of like a fish pie/casserole), which was absolutely delicious.

And those cinnamon rolls...I am still dreaming about them!

Day 3 in Iceland! 🇮🇸 Our third day in Iceland was Day 3 in Iceland! 🇮🇸

Our third day in Iceland was a day trip to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula - aka "Iceland in Miniature." It was very windy and cold here but much less busy than the routes of the South Coast! We saw such a variety of landscapes on the peninsula, though I wish we would have had a little bit more daylight to add more stops.

Back in Reykjavik for the evening, we had dinner and then went on a successful Northern Lights chase!

It was a long day but awesome!
